I bought you a gift and I broke it
By knocking it off of a shelf.
It wasn't on purpose, it's just what occurred
When I briefly lost track of myself.

You see, I'm a little bit clumsy
I don't always move as I planned.
My body and mind left each other behind
And I couldn't keep up with my hand.

The gift was a cup made of porcelain
That shattered on hitting the floor.
I've glued it together, but still it'll never
Hold coffee or tea anymore.

The pieces don't fit like they used to
The glue gives off poisonous fumes
And the poorly-joined edges make sharp, ugly ledges
That ought to be lacquered and smooth.

I've set the cup out on the counter
To let the glued crevices cure.
The residue lingers all over my fingers
They're scratchy and gross and impure.

I can knock things off shelves but not catch them
My fingers can break but not mend.
Such delicate treasures as teacups and lovers
Might meet the same fragmented end.
